In the Middle Ages, the counts of Gruyère had built a castle or watchtower there. That structure has disappeared over time, and the original church, once located in the village, was moved to this higher location, giving it a new setting and open panorama over the valley.
The name Œx likely comes from the Celtic word “Ogo”, meaning high country, from which the forms D’Oex and D’Oey were derived.
