Alpine Cheese Trails | Night on Straw at Belles Combes

At Belles Combes, reach Colin Rayroud’s alpine chalet on foot, share an alpine dinner, sleep on straw and discover how L’Etivaz AOP is made.

What if walking made the mountains taste even better? At Belles Combes, Colin Rayroud welcomes you to his alpine chalet perched at 1,500 metres above sea level, surrounded by bright meadows and conifer forests.

After a round-trip hike of around 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on the chosen route, you arrive in a simple, authentic setting where time seems to slow down. The evening begins with a friendly dinner, accompanied by warm conversations about life on the alp, the herd and the cheesemaker’s craft.

The night is spent on straw, lulled by the sound of cowbells and the deep calm of the mountains. The next day, discover the secrets of L’Etivaz AOP, an alpine cheese stirred by hand in large copper cauldrons heated over a wood fire. Colin guides you through this savoir-faire passed down through generations, before sharing a farmer’s breakfast with bread, butter, jam, honey and cheeses from the previous day.
